Evoke 2013 is history! 500 people showed up and saw some of the most remarkable compos in Evoke´s history. Together with the wonderful weather (though the wasps really sucked), nice dj & vj sets, interesting seminars & kids corner it became a really great atmosphere.Â
A big thank you to everyone who made this possible. We are still completely blown away! Thanks!
The first evening of this year´s Evoke is already over.
For those who cannot attend: try to get the party feeling at Scenesat live broadcast! In addition there are tags on Twitter, Vine, Instagram and Flickr where people are constantly posting impressions from the party.Â
In addition here are some moving pictures from the buildup (filmed by a quadrocopter):
Hey! And consider joining (again) us next year!
We are very proud to announce that for the first time ever Rovio Entertainment will sponsor Evoke. If you don't know the name Rovio yet, you for sure know their main brand: it's Angry Birds! The entertainment company from Finland will support the new "Kid's Corner" at Evoke, the perfect place for your kids, young sceners and every oldskool scener who is still young at heart. The Kid's Corner's program ranges from challenging handicrafts like Origami to LED circuit set-ups and first computer programming tasks. Content-wise it will be accustomed by several initiatives you might have heard of:
Hans-Werner Guth from Dingfabrik Köln e.V. offers an Origami workshop. From aerodynamical paper plane to complex sculptures you can put your analogue creativity to a test.
Elisabeth Wegner from Mehreinfach and Jan Kus from Railslove GmbH are involved in the non-profit organization CoderDojo which imparts knowledge about technology and it's creative applications in a playful, hands-on way. They will offer workshops about LEDs, hacking and coding.
But what would a real Kid's Corner be without Angry Birds? Rovio offers fun activity books and toys from the "Angry Birds" universe, as well as episodes of "Angry Birds Toons", the bite-size cartoon available on select TV networks as well as in the Angry Birds games on iOS and Android.
On top, our other new sponsor Carlsen Verlag contributes a selection of their âPixiâ books, famous since 1954.

Still made an interactive version of "Square" Â using a LEAP-Motion controller. Pixtur will present on stage how to interact with the demo. You can easily navigate the camera inside the running animation and adjust the parameters of the fractal.Â
Afterwards there is the chance for YOU to play around with it.
With Carlsen Verlag we are happy to present a new sponsor for Evoke. The publishing house is specialized in comic books and has a direct connection to the demoscene. The first comic from Helge^Haujobb was just released by Carlsen this summer: "Alisik". You can achieve several copies by participating in our graphics compos. On top we will sell a limited amount at the infodesk; as always every single Cent of profit will be payed out as price money.
Alisik is developed by Helge together with the German writer Hubertus Rufledt. It tells the story about a 16-year-old girl who dies, but doesnât leave the world completely. She is trapped between life and death without having any memories about her previous existence. Soon she realizes that she didnât die from natural circumstances, so she is eager to gain information about her destiny.Â
Gloomy and beautiful illustrations will take you on a journey with eccentric postmortals, an endangered graveyard and a heartwarming lovestory. And for sure you will recognize several motives from Helge's demoscene productions.
There is a new bus line coming directly from "Köln Messe/Deutz" (long-distance train station) to the party place.
Take the line 150 (direction "Heinrich-Bützler-StraÃe") exit at the stop "Christian-Sünner-StraÃe" right in front of the Abenteuerhallen. The bus leaves every 30 min and you only have to get a short trip ticket (Kurzstrecke), which costs 1,90â¬.
Are you going to evoke? Are you into VJing? Do you want to support our DJs live at the outside area? If you just answered all questions with "Yes!" please contact us through our contact form. If possible send us some nice shots of your previous work. We would be thankful for your support.
It's party hopper summer again! Demodays (Olten, Switzerland) and Evoke bring you the traditional combined ticket! Save 5 bucks with the ticket that's valid for both parties. Evoke takes place in Cologne (16-18 August) and the Demodays are taking off just one week later in Olten. To start the party hopping, you go to the entrance of Evoke and mention you want tobuy the combined ticket, have your cash ready and tell your name. Just one week later, at the Demodays info desk, you show your Evoke bracelet + the ticket and you're in. Thats it!
If you were not yet planning to go to Demodays and Evoke, isn't this reason enough to think it over again?!
If you are younger than 18 and consider to visit Evoke, then please note that we highly appreciate that, but because of legal issues, we can not let you into the party place without a declaration of consent filled out by your parents. Please get in touch with us and we'll provide you with the necessary info.
We're happy to announce the complete lineup of music acts that will play during the Evoke weekend at our outdoor area. You can look forward to: Alkama, Black Maiden Hi-Fi, Computadora, D0dge, Roots'n'Fruits, Tomasan, and Wiklund! Click here for more info on the artists.
For the 6th time fractalforums.com has been organizing a fractal art competition. In three sections (still frame, theme "axolotl" and video) over 180 entries have been submitted and 4000 votes were counted.
We are proud that the prizegiving ceremony will happen at Evoke on Saturday at 18:00.Â
Expect to see the best entries and an unforgettable show: Girls, golden shirt and shiny bakery are promised. So are coffee mugs as prizes!Â
Another event for you to consider staying a little longer in Cologne after Evoke is Respawn - gathering of game developers.Â
The freshingly new games conference is also happening in AbenteuerhallenKalk (so you will not have problems finding the location) on Monday and Tuesday after Evoke!
It features talks on major game development and marketing issues, such as game design, art direction, coding, sound design and business happening at different spots in the large hall. In addition they will offer a bbq on Monday and a closing party on Tuesday! In total: a great warm up for gamescom!
Tickets are available starting at 59 Euro.
In 2011 we participated in Platine Cologne with a "best of Evoke" demoshow. This year they have something really special:
Featuring the textmode-graphics from various artists and visualize them in a new way. By using various printing techniques they will transform these nostalgic artworks into reality and introduce them to the public in individual ways â from letters to characters up to complete comic-stories and abstract wild-styles.
The exhibition is part of Platine: starting on Monday after Evoke until the 23rd of August! Every day from 19:00 to 23:00. Free entrance!
Even the good old ANSI/ASCII competition has to face changes for this year´s edition of Evoke:Â
For the first time we will allow entries which have already been released in packs and collections, but only if these were released in 2013! The information has to be present with your submission and will be displayed on the big screen, so the visitors can judge.Â
Just like the last years you do not have to be present at the party to release. The deadline for remote entries is 16th of August.Â
We would like to make it a blast of a competition, so please contribute and show how vital the scene still is!Â
So if you are arriving early in Cologne for Evoke or are still planning your trip this will be the place to be on Thursday evening!Â
Some Evoke organizers will be there for sure. Expect us to arrive a little later, as we are busy setting up the location that day.
Another musician can now be announced - it's good old Alkama from France who will give you some techhouse beats on Friday night! More info here. And we're still not done with the musicians, there are more to come! Keep your eyes open.
The second seminar on Evoke Saturday will be held by filmmaker, visual artist and software developer Friedrich Kirschner.
In his talk he will discuss how realtime animation can work in a theatre context. And how to provide tools for actors and directors that go beyond pretty stage-visuals, but actually impact the way we tell stories using live computer graphics.
Beneath all the compos, live acts, barbeque and meeting friends we also provide you with some interesting seminars at Evoke:
First confirmed seminar is by Steffen Kaus who is going to show his approach to reverse engineer an amiga bootblock demo by using the film-compositing software Nuke. Nuke can be called first-choice in the VFX industry today.
The seminar will happen Saturday at 13:00. More seminars will be annouced shortly.
We finally published the pixel palette for the Fixed Palette Pixel Competition!
We replaced the old Pixel Compo with a new one, where you have to use a given Palette of colors. You can even attend this Competition from remote! Read all updated rules at the Graphic Compo Rules Page
As you might have heard we have made some changes to the Evoke competitons. In a small series of news entries we will tell you what has changed and what is new.
After featuring the old Tiny Music compo for several years, we decided that it's time to pose a new challenge to tracker musicians. So, this year we bring you the One-Sample Tracking compo. It's up to you to create the most amazing tune with only the one chiptune sample provided by us. Happy tracking! For the details compo rules, see here.
We are extremely happy to share with you the news about who will make you dance and jump on Friday night: WIKLUND of Fairlight fame will come all the way from Sweden with his Gameboys in the pocket. So what to expect? Melodic Gameboy Rave! More info here. Keep your eyes open for more music announcements.
We are proud to announce the first of the musical acts who will make you move in our outdoor tent area - COMPUTADORA, who runs the Bleepstreet label from Berlin, will give you highly danceable chip vibes on Saturday night after the democompo. Click here to see what he sounds like, and keep your eyes open for more music announcements in the next days.
As Evoke is approaching we have added the first entries to the timetable. Find all compos and deadlines and the first events there. Seminars and live acts will be added shortly when they are annouced.
